Annual Pulling for Colorado Flagship Event
|
|
|
Lamb
Spring
On
Saturday
July 11, 2009
the Pulling For Colorado flagship event will be held at Lamb Spring,
just south of Chatfield Reservoir in
Douglas
County
. Volunteers will help remove noxious weeds from this
important archeological site.
This
35-acre preserve contains the remains of at least 24 mammoths along with
other Pleistocene animals including camel and sloth. Partially excavated
in the 1960s and again in the 1980s by the Smithsonian, the site
contains possible evidence of man’s presence dating back 13,000 years.
At a higher level in the site, an 8,000-year-old Cody complex bison kill
was discovered.
Lamb
Spring was acquired in 1995 by the Archeological Conservancy, a
non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and preserving the best
of our nation's remaining archaeological sites. The
Conservancy formed a unique alliance with the Denver Museum of Science
and Nature and
Douglas
County
to acquire, preserve, study and interpret the site.
This
Pulling For Colorado event will be limited to the first 100 volunteers.
Parking is restricted, so please carpool.

Peak
Wilderness encompasses 14,000 acres on the east side of the Continental
Divide. It is home to high alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and
James
Peak
, the area’s 13,294 ft namesake. Unfortunately, populations of the
destructive Oxeye daisy are flourishing at its access points and
reducing and eliminating native plant populations. Previous eradication
efforts in the area have been successful in protecting riparian areas.
